Thailand has carried out air strikes on Cambodia as tensions flared in a renewed border conflict. The Thai military reported that two of its soldiers were killed and four others wounded in what it described as a Cambodian attack.

“Airstrikes were carried out on various military targets to repel the Cambodian attack,” the army said.

Cambodian officials, however, said Thailand initiated the attack and that their forces did not retaliate.

The two countries had previously agreed to a ceasefire brokered by Malaysia and former U.S. President Donald Trump. Both sides now accuse each other of violating the agreement.

The recent escalation comes amid a history of deadly clashes. A five-day border fight last July killed at least 48 people and displaced 300,000. Thailand reported a 35-minute clash in the southeastern province of Si Sa Ket yesterday and has ordered troops to withdraw from Si Sa Ket, Buri Ram, Surin, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces.

Today, Thai and Cambodian forces exchanged fire along the border, raising concerns over further escalation despite previous efforts to stabilise the region.
