A curfew has been imposed in the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam, following clashes between police and protesters.

Sources at Muhimbili Hospital said the number of people injured in the clashes following Wednesday's election is increasing.

President Samia Suloh is expected to win the election.

The election came after the leader of the main opposition party was arrested and charged with treason, a charge the politician denies.

The opposition has been demanding the right to free political activity.

Vehicles were set on fire during the protests, and highways were damaged.

Tanzanian police chief Camelius Wambura urged residents to stay indoors after announcing the curfew.

He did not say when the curfew would be lifted.

President Samia was sworn in as the country's first female leader in 2021, with hopes of ushering in democratic change.

Samia, who took office after the death of John Magufuli, has increasingly been cracking down on opposition figures.
