A visit by China’s Foreign Minister to Ethiopia has led to a joint statement from the two countries’ foreign ministries, prompting a response from Taiwan.

The Taiwanese representative office in Somaliland said Ethiopia “is not a country that recognizes Taiwan” and called the concept of a “single China” misleading, signalling strong pushback against the joint statement.

Taiwan criticised claims that the Ethiopian government “has embraced the propaganda orchestrated by the Chinese Communist Party,” stating that such assertions misrepresent Taiwan’s status and wrongly suggest the island is under Beijing’s influence.

Taiwan also emphasised that “no country possesses the right to undermine Taiwan's sovereignty or its democratic rights,” challenging Ethiopia’s alignment with China’s position.

In response, Ethiopia urged a halt to actions “that suggest following China in a manner that promotes conflict and undermines peace and stability.”

China continues to assert its claim over Taiwan, underlining the principle of “One China” and its ongoing objective of reunification with the island.
