Authorities have found the man suspected of a mass shooting at Brown University and the murder of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor dead in a New Hampshire storage facility.

Claudio Neves Valente, 48, a former Brown student and Portuguese national, was discovered on Thursday evening from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Providence Police Chief Colonel Oscar Perez said at a news conference. Perez added that, based on current evidence, Neves Valente acted alone.

Investigators believe he is responsible for both the Brown University shooting on Saturday, which left two dead and nine injured, and the killing of MIT professor Nuno FG Loureiro at his home near Boston on Monday, according to Leah B Foley, US attorney for Massachusetts.

The investigation intensified Thursday when authorities suggested a possible link between the Brown shooting and Loureiro’s death. Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed that Neves Valente was enrolled at the university from fall 2000 to spring 2001 but has no current affiliation. Foley noted that Neves Valente and Loureiro had studied in the same academic programme at a university in Portugal between 1995 and 2000.

The FBI had previously stated it was unaware of any connection between the two attacks.
