The Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have announced their capture of the western town of El-Fasher, a key turning point in the civil war.

The group said in a statement on social media that El-Fasher had been liberated from the "claws of militants and mercenaries allied with the terrorist army."

If the RSF takes full control of El-Fasher, it will be a major loss for the Sudanese army, as it is the last area in the Darfur region under its control.

The Sudanese army has not yet commented.

This comes after the rebel group announced it had taken control of the army's 6th Division headquarters, destroying "large military vehicles" and seizing military equipment.

BBC Verify has verified the authenticity of footage circulating on social media showing RSF fighters in a Sudanese army camp.

The Popular Resistance, a local pro-army group, has accused the RSF of carrying out a "media disinformation campaign" to "undermine the high morale of the force".

The RSF has been besieging El-Fasher for the past 18 months, repeatedly carrying out attacks on army camps and civilians.
