S&P Global Completes Acquisition of Blockchain Security Firm OpenZeppelin

S&P Global has completed its acquisition of OpenZeppelin, a blockchain security company whose smart contract technology supports more than 38 trillion US dollars in transferred value, as the financial information provider expands its risk assessment capabilities in digital asset markets.

The transaction, first announced on September 17, 2026, will combine S&P Global’s risk assessment capabilities with OpenZeppelin’s expertise in blockchain security and the development of onchain financial infrastructure, the companies said.

Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin provides security assessments and development services for blockchain protocols and financial institutions. Its security team has completed more than 900 engagements and identified more than 10,000 vulnerabilities before production, according to the company.

Its open-source OpenZeppelin Contracts library supports smart contracts used across digital asset markets, including stablecoins and tokenised funds. The company also develops blockchain infrastructure for networks and financial institutions.

The acquisition will extend S&P Global’s risk assessment capabilities into the technology risks underlying blockchain-based financial products. S&P Global said its institutional relationships and global distribution network would help expand OpenZeppelin’s reach among traditional financial institutions.

“As more of the financial system moves onchain, market participants need a clear view of the technology risk that sits beneath the assets they hold,” said Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings.

OpenZeppelin will continue operating as a separate business unit under its existing name, with founder Demian Brener remaining at the helm and reporting to Le Pallec.

Brener said the company would continue providing security assessments and development services while maintaining its OpenZeppelin Contracts library as open-source software that is free and publicly maintained.

The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. S&P Global said the transaction was not expected to have a material impact on its financial results.

Jefferies advised S&P Global on the transaction, with Clifford Chance acting as its legal adviser. FT Partners served as OpenZeppelin’s exclusive financial and strategic adviser, while Cooley provided legal advice.
