South Africa’s National Assembly is moving ahead with the early phase of an impeachment process against President Cyril Ramaphosa, with a parliamentary committee scheduled to hold its first meeting on Monday to examine allegations linked to the so-called “Farmgate” scandal.

The committee, comprising 31 members, is expected to begin its work by electing a chairperson, according to the Democratic Alliance.

The development follows a ruling by the Constitutional Court earlier this month that revived the impeachment process.

The allegations centre on claims that large sums of cash were stolen in 2020 from a sofa at the president’s farm, raising questions about the origin of the money.

The ANC, which holds about 40 percent of seats in the National Assembly, has publicly backed the president and is expected to resist any eventual impeachment vote.

Ramaphosa has separately filed a legal challenge against an independent panel report that found preliminary evidence of misconduct.
