South Africa has announced it will no longer accept Palestinians seeking to leave the country, following the recent arrival of a large group, many reportedly from Gaza.

The decision follows last week’s controversial flight that brought 153 Palestinians to South Africa, an arrival officials described as uncertain and contentious.

Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola said the mass arrivals appear to be part of “a clear agenda to clear Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank,” and warned that further charter flights carrying Palestinians would not be accepted.

Authorities cited concerns that the influx could form part of a broader “cleansing agenda” targeting Palestinians from Gaza and other territories.
