The son of a senior Hamas negotiator involved in US-mediated discussions over Gaza’s future has died after an Israeli airstrike, as negotiations aimed at maintaining the truce with Israel continued in Cairo.

Azzam Al-Hayya died on Thursday from wounds sustained in an Israeli strike. His father, Khalil Al-Hayya, is among Hamas leaders engaged in talks concerning ceasefire arrangements. Azzam was reported to be the fourth son of the official killed during the conflict.

The developments coincided with meetings in Cairo where discussions focused on preserving the truce. Separately, an Israeli airstrike targeted a police post in western Gaza City, killing at least three police officers.

The Israeli military said the strike targeted a Hamas command centre in northern Gaza. According to the military, those targeted had been involved in planning attacks against Israeli civilians and military personnel.

Despite the violence, mediators remain hopeful that a long-term agreement can be reached to stabilize the region.
