Somaliland has asked the United Nations to notify and consult its government before senior UN officials visit Laascaanood, following a recent visit by a senior UN delegation to the city.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said visits by senior UN officials to areas it considers politically and security-sensitive should take place through established diplomatic channels.

The ministry said such visits should involve prior notification, consultation and coordination with the Somaliland government.

Somaliland said it remains committed to facilitating humanitarian assistance to communities in need, including residents of Laascaanood, and stressed that its position does not affect the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The government also reaffirmed its longstanding partnership with the United Nations and said it remains committed to continued cooperation.

The statement followed a visit to Laascaanood by a senior UN delegation. Somaliland said it had taken note of the visit but did not provide further details about the delegation’s activities or the purpose of the trip.

The ministry said it expects established diplomatic procedures and communication channels to be respected in future UN engagements.

Laascaanood, in Sool region, has been at the centre of a dispute over territorial control between Somaliland and forces aligned with the SSC-Khatumo administration.

Somaliland’s statement did not announce any change to its humanitarian policy towards Laascaanood or other communities in need.
