Somaliland has renewed its international recognition campaign, saying it expects Ethiopia could be among the next countries to formally recognise its statehood. This follows what it described as Israel’s recognition at the end of 2025.

The statement came alongside annual May 18 events in Hargeisa marking Somaliland’s declaration of independence from Somalia. Celebrations included official ceremonies and military displays.

Presidential minister Khadar Hussein publicly thanked several partners, including Ethiopia, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates and Kenya, for sustained engagement. He expressed hope that Addis Ababa would eventually move toward formal recognition.

Foreign Minister Abdurahman Dahir Adan said Somaliland considered Ethiopia, Taiwan and the UAE among its closest partners and expected them to follow the recognition step it said Israel had already taken.

Somaliland also announced the establishment of the Somaliland Independence and Recognition Institute during the celebrations. The new body will be chaired by former UK defence secretary Gavin Williamson.

The developments highlight Somaliland’s continued diplomatic push for international recognition and stronger ties with key regional partners like Ethiopia.
