Six people were arrested in Milan on Saturday amid clashes between demonstrators and police, marking a tense start to the Winter Olympics in the northern Italian city.

Thousands of residents took to the streets to protest rising living costs and other social grievances. Some set fires and hurled stones at law enforcement, who responded with water cannons to disperse the crowds.

The unrest comes days after violent protests in Turnu, which prompted a nationwide curfew. Government figures report that more than 100 police officers were injured in Turnu, including one struck with a hammer in what Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called an “attempted murder.”

The incidents highlight growing public frustration over economic pressures and the challenges authorities face in maintaining order amid large-scale demonstrations.
