Shell has appointed Elohor Aiboni as executive vice-president and country chair for Nigeria, making her the first Nigerian to hold the combined leadership position in the company’s history.

Aiboni will assume the role on August 1, 2026, succeeding Marno de Jong, who is leaving Shell after 34 years with the energy company.

The appointment places a Nigerian executive at the helm of Shell’s operations in one of its longest-standing markets, as the company navigates changes in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, including renewed focus on deepwater production, gas development and energy infrastructure.

Aiboni, currently asset director at Brunei Shell Petroleum, brings more than 24 years of experience within Shell’s upstream business. Her career has included work across offshore, shallow-water and onshore assets, as well as international assignments in Kazakhstan and Brunei.

She previously served as managing director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company, where she oversaw major deepwater projects and gained extensive experience in Nigeria’s upstream sector.

"I’m excited at the opportunity to continue to contribute to the efficient delivery of Shell’s business in Nigeria and thereby power progress in a country we’ve been part of for more than 60 years," Aiboni said.

She also recognised de Jong’s contribution to Shell’s Nigerian operations, saying his leadership helped maintain business performance during a period of major changes in the country’s energy industry.

De Jong said he was confident in Shell’s future under Aiboni’s leadership, citing her operational background and experience.

"I’m confident that Shell operations in Nigeria will continue to deliver value and growth under Elohor, given the strong leadership credentials she brings to the role," he said.
