Severe Storm Batters Ethiopia’s Hawassa, Knocking Out Power and Damaging Infrastructure

Parts of Hawassa have been left without electricity after a severe storm damaged power infrastructure, bringing down trees and concrete electricity poles across parts of the city, according to the city administration. The storm, which brought hail, heavy rainfall and strong winds, caused damage to property and infrastructure in several areas. The administration said the incident affected people and property but did not disclose whether any deaths had been recorded.

Repair and emergency response operations have started, with authorities assessing the damage and working to restore interrupted services. The city administration said teams have been sent to affected areas to provide support, transport injured residents to medical facilities and evaluate losses.

Images from the affected locations showed fallen trees and electricity poles damaging vehicles and other property. The administration said additional measures were being taken to reduce risks and address the impact of the storm. The Ethiopian Meteorology Institute has warned that rainfall could become stronger in the coming days, increasing the possibility of flooding and further weather-related incidents.

Hawassa residents have been advised to avoid areas near trees, ageing electricity poles and fences that could collapse during heavy rain and strong winds. The city administration said it is identifying areas vulnerable to flooding and strengthening preventive measures while continuing efforts to restore essential services affected by the storm.
