Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the government. The sudden move triggers a sweeping executive reshuffle at a critical time for the country’s economy and IMF negotiations.

The presidency announced that all ministers had been relieved of their duties. The outgoing cabinet was instructed to continue handling routine affairs until a new administration is formed.

Sonko’s removal marks a sharp turn in relations between the two leaders, who were previously close allies. Sonko played a key role in Faye’s rise to the presidency in 2024.

Following the announcement, Sonko posted on social media that he would “sleep with a light heart” at his residence, indicating acceptance of the decision.

The shake-up comes amid ongoing economic challenges and talks with the International Monetary Fund. It highlights shifting political dynamics within Senegal’s governing coalition.
