Saudi Arabia Arrests Suspect in Killing of Ethiopian Nationals, Embassy Says

Saudi Arabian authorities have arrested a man accused of carrying out a killing involving Ethiopian nationals near the country’s border and desert areas, along with five alleged accomplices, according to the Ethiopian Embassy in Riyadh.

More than 100 other people suspected of spreading and amplifying information about the incident on social media have also been taken into custody, with their cases under investigation, the embassy said in a statement.

The arrests followed cooperation between the Ethiopian embassy, members of the Ethiopian community and Saudi security authorities, with information provided by the embassy and community members contributing to the investigation.

The embassy did not identify the suspects or provide details about the victim, the circumstances of the killing or the specific location where it occurred.

Saudi authorities are continuing to investigate those detained over their alleged role in circulating information about the incident on social media, according to the embassy.

The Ethiopian mission said it was working with Saudi security institutions to ensure those responsible for the crime are brought before the courts and that the rule of law is upheld.

The embassy also urged Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia to refrain from circulating unverified information about the incident, while asking anyone with information about people involved in the alleged crime to report it to the mission.

The statement comes after images and reports concerning an alleged confrontation and killing among some Ethiopians in a border and desert area of Saudi Arabia circulated widely on social media.

The embassy thanked members of the Ethiopian community who provided information to authorities and urged Ethiopians to comply with Saudi laws and regulations, saying this would help protect their own safety as well as the dignity and unity of the community.
