South Africa is cautiously optimistic about its trade negotiations with the United States, despite Washington’s recent imposition of 30 percent tariffs on key South African exports, Bloomberg reported.

The country’s Trade Minister, Parks Tau, met US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer this week in what his ministry described as a “cordial and constructive” session. The discussions followed three days of team-level negotiations aimed at addressing the tariff dispute.

A ministry spokesperson, Kaamil Alli, said both sides had agreed on a roadmap to guide future discussions and identified priorities to expedite the resolution process. The developments suggest a potential easing of tensions in a trade relationship recently strained by the tariffs.
