Russian air strikes on major Ukrainian cities including Kyiv, Dnipro and Kharkiv killed at least nine people and injured more than 60 early on Tuesday, according to regional authorities, in one of the most intense waves of attacks in recent weeks.

In Dnipro, a missile and drone strike killed five people and left 25 others injured. He added that all the injured were in moderate condition in hospital.

The capital Kyiv also came under sustained attack, where at least four people were killed and 51 injured, including children. A suspected missile strike on a 24-storey residential building caused structural collapse.

Residents in Kyiv sought shelter underground as air raid sirens sounded across much of the country, with thousands crowding into the metro system carrying belongings and mattresses.

Further north-east, in Kharkiv, officials reported 10 injuries, including a child, following combined drone and missile strikes.

The attacks followed days of warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who said intelligence indicated the possibility of a large-scale assault.
