Russia Pledges to Rally BRICS Founders Behind Ghana’s Bid for Partner Status

Russia has pledged to mobilise support among founding members of BRICS for Ghana's application to join the bloc as a partner country, potentially advancing Accra's efforts to deepen economic and diplomatic ties with emerging economies.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the commitment during a breakfast meeting with African foreign ministers on October 28, 2026, according to a statement from Ghana's government.

Lavrov said Moscow would rally the founding BRICS members to build consensus in support of Ghana's application.

Ghana's Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who is accompanying President John Dramani Mahama at the Russia-Africa Summit, expressed appreciation for Russia's backing.

The discussions took place as African foreign ministers held strategic engagements with their Russian counterpart on the sidelines of the summit.

Ghana's application comes as the country seeks to diversify its international economic and diplomatic partnerships while maintaining its longstanding foreign policy of non-alignment.

The Mahama administration has said it intends to pursue development partnerships based on national interests, describing its diplomatic approach as having "friends of all, enemies to none".

BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has expanded its membership in recent years and introduced a partner-country category as part of its engagement with additional countries.
