Rocket Companies has completed its 14.2 billion US dollar acquisition of Mr. Cooper Group, combining the United States’ largest home-loan originator with its largest mortgage servicer and creating a servicing portfolio covering nearly 10 million homeowners.

The Detroit-based homeownership platform said the deal will bring Mr. Cooper’s servicing operations under the Rocket brand, expanding the company’s reach across the US housing market.

The acquisition gives Rocket a larger base of homeowners to which it can offer mortgage products throughout the homeownership cycle, including financing for purchases, refinancing and home-equity loans.

The transaction also brings a leadership change. Jay Bray, who led Mr. Cooper for 25 years, will become president and chief executive of Rocket Mortgage, reporting to Rocket Companies CEO Varun Krishna. Bray will also join Rocket’s board of directors.

The deal is part of Rocket’s strategy to build an integrated homeownership business. The company completed its acquisition of real-estate platform Redfin in July, adding home search to its existing mortgage, title and closing operations.

With the Mr. Cooper transaction now complete, Rocket’s businesses span home search, financing, title, closing and mortgage servicing. The company said the combination would allow it to deepen relationships with homeowners by offering products suited to different stages of their financial lives.

Technology is another component of the strategy. Rocket said it has invested 500 million US dollars in data and artificial intelligence and plans to use those capabilities across the expanded platform.

Mr. Cooper brings significant servicing scale to the group. The combined companies will service mortgages for nearly 10 million homeowners, giving Rocket a substantially larger customer base and increasing the potential for additional lending business from existing borrowers.

Rocket CEO Varun Krishna said combining Mr. Cooper’s servicing capabilities with Rocket’s lending platform, technology and national brand would help reduce costs and simplify the homeownership process.

Bray said the transaction ends Mr. Cooper’s 25-year expansion as an independent company and begins a new phase within Rocket.

The acquisition consolidates mortgage origination and servicing within a single corporate group as Rocket expands its presence across the US housing market, following its separate move into residential property search through Redfin.
