Benishangul–Oromia Road Closure Worsens Hardships, MP Warns

The road connecting Benishangul Gumuz region to the Oromia region is not providing transportation services due to security problems, causing social and economic pressure on the residents of both regions, said Ms. Menahul Imran, a member of the House of People's Representatives.

Council member Ms. Menahul stated that the residents of Assosa City have been facing various social and economic problems due to the road being closed for years. During a discussion with two residents of the Assosa City Woreda, she represented, she mentioned this issue.

In addition to the road problem, the council member stated that “due to the lack of a referral hospital in the region, residents of the region are being forced to travel to neighboring regions and Addis Ababa, incurring high costs.” Based on this, they called for the construction of a referral hospital at the regional level.

Honorable Ms. Menahul stated that efforts are being made to address unanswered questions in terms of ensuring infrastructure equity and accessibility.

The information also included that they will work diligently to address major and current issues raised by the community to the federal government.

It is known that the road from Benishangul Gumuz capital Assosa to Addis Ababa has been closed for more than seven years due to security problems.
