Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected Western proposals to deploy troops as a "security force" after a ceasefire agreement was reached in Ukraine at a summit in Paris.

French President Emmanuel Macron said 26 of Ukraine's allies had publicly pledged to deploy their troops "by land, sea or air" to ensure the country's stability after the war ended.

Macron did not specify which countries had pledged to contribute troops.

Putin has rejected a promise made by Ukraine's allies, warning that any troops deployed in Ukraine would be "targeted."

The president added that while there was no immediate desire to deploy troops, he warned that if that happened, they would not escape being targeted.

Hopes for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia have been dashed.

Last month, Putin met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Alaska, where he met with his US counterpart Donald Trump, hoping to reach a peace deal.
