Putin Praises Ethiopia as Longstanding Russian Partner in Africa

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described Ethiopia as a long-standing and reliable partner for Russia in Africa, as he met Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi.

During the bilateral meeting, Putin said relations between the two countries had continued to develop across several areas, while Abiy thanked Russia for its support for Ethiopia’s accession to BRICS.

The Ethiopian prime minister said cooperation between the two countries had gained momentum in defence, trade, investment and education.

Putin said the relationship between Russia and Ethiopia was based on friendship, equality and mutual benefit, and pointed to growing economic and educational links between the two countries.

According to the Russian president, trade between Ethiopia and Russia increased more than threefold in 2025. He also noted that more than 20,000 Ethiopians had received education in Russia, describing the ties as a foundation for further cooperation.

Putin also expressed satisfaction that Ethiopia had become a full member of BRICS during Russia’s chairmanship of the group.

Ethiopia joined BRICS in January 2024 alongside Egypt, Iran and the United Arab Emirates as part of the bloc’s first major expansion. Indonesia subsequently became a full member in 2025.

The meeting also included an invitation for Abiy to attend the third Russia-Africa Summit, scheduled to take place in Moscow on October 28 and 29.

Putin congratulated Abiy and the Ethiopian people on the Ethiopian New Year, which was celebrated on September 11.
