Security forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo dispersed demonstrators outside the national parliament in Kinshasa on Friday, as opposition groups rallied against proposed constitutional changes that critics say could pave the way for President Félix Tshisekedi to seek a third term.

The protest was organised by Coalition Article 64 (C64), an opposition alliance that includes former presidential candidates Martin Fayulu and Moïse Katumbi, and brought together supporters gathered in a sit-in outside the parliamentary complex.

Reuters reported that several protesters, including political figures, were injured during the confrontation. Jean-Baptiste Kasekwa, a member of Fayulu’s party, told the news agency that police, army personnel and individuals aligned with the ruling party had been deployed around parliament since early morning to prevent the sit-in.

Opposition figure Delly Sesanga’s communication team said on X that he had been shot in the leg during the clashes.

Authorities in Kinshasa have not yet responded to questions regarding the use of live ammunition. A police official at the scene told reporters that security forces intervened to restore order.

The unrest came days after the National Assembly approved a bill allowing constitutional amendments to be submitted to a public referendum, a move opposition leaders argue could ultimately remove presidential term limits.

Under the current constitution, President Félix Tshisekedi is limited to two terms. He was elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2023.

However, Tshisekedi recently suggested the possibility of running again, saying he would stand for a third term if requested by the Congolese public.
