Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s “Medemer” book is set to enter China’s publishing market as the Chinese translation of the political philosophy nears completion, according to Fana Media Corporation.

The translation marks the latest expansion of “Medemer”, a concept introduced by Abiy following Ethiopia’s political transition in 2018 and presented by his government as a framework centred on cooperation, collective progress and national development.

The book has already been translated into Amharic, Afaan Oromo and English, with Arabic and Urdu editions also released. The Chinese edition would extend its reach into one of the world’s largest language communities.

Fana Media Corporation reported that the translation into Chinese comes as Ethiopia seeks to expand the international visibility of its homegrown political ideas while maintaining close diplomatic and economic relations with Beijing.

The move places “Medemer” in a country with a long tradition of political philosophy and state-building thought, where ideas associated with leaders such as Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping have shaped modern political discourse.

Beyond its role as a book translation, the Chinese edition represents an effort by Ethiopia to project its own political narrative internationally. Previous translations have taken the concept beyond Ethiopia into African, Middle Eastern and South Asian audiences.

The government has promoted “Medemer” as an indigenous Ethiopian philosophy, while critics of Abiy’s administration have debated its political interpretation and practical application.

The Chinese version is expected to become the latest edition of Abiy’s work available to foreign readers as Ethiopia continues efforts to increase its cultural and diplomatic engagement abroad.
