Pitron Brings Core Banking Technology to Ethiopia's Cooperative Lenders

Pitron Technology Solutions has launched a core banking platform aimed at digitising savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOs) and microfinance institutions (MFIs), targeting one of the country's least modernised segments of the financial sector. The launch of Pitron FinOS comes as Ethiopia seeks to expand digital financial services beyond commercial banks into cooperative institutions, many of which continue to rely on paper-based records despite rapid advances in banking technology and mobile money.

More than 18,000 SACCOs operate across the country, but most still manage deposits, loans and member records manually. Regulators say the lack of digital infrastructure has reduced operational efficiency, increased administrative costs and exposed institutions to financial leakages while slowing service delivery. Pitron said FinOS is designed as a core banking system that automates customer account management, loan administration, transaction processing and financial reporting.

The platform also enables institutions to monitor employee performance and replace manual workflows with integrated digital processes. "The cooperative sector has remained one of the last frontiers of digital finance in Ethiopia," company officials said during the launch event in Addis Ababa, adding that the software has been developed specifically for the operational needs of SACCOs and microfinance institutions.

The product is immediately available for deployment and can be customised according to the requirements of individual financial institutions, the company said. The launch reflects growing opportunities for domestic technology companies as financial sector reforms drive demand for digital infrastructure beyond the banking industry.

Commercial banks have invested heavily in digital banking platforms in recent years, while cooperatives and smaller lenders have lagged behind. Pitron also announced that it has become one of Ethiopia's certified local implementation partners for Temenos AG, the Swiss banking software company whose core banking platforms are used by financial institutions worldwide.
