The Philippines will open its first embassy in Ghana later this year, creating a permanent diplomatic presence in the West African country as Accra and Manila seek to expand trade, investment and broader bilateral cooperation.

The decision was welcomed by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during a meeting with Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The planned embassy will provide a permanent channel for diplomatic engagement between the two countries and comes as both governments seek to strengthen their economic relationship.

Alongside the embassy opening, Ghana and the Philippines agreed to deepen trade and investment cooperation, including through business forums to be held in both countries. The two sides also agreed to establish a chamber of commerce to facilitate stronger links between businesses and investors.

Ablakwa conveyed Ghana’s appreciation for the Philippine government’s decision to establish the diplomatic mission, describing it as a significant development in the long-standing relations between the two countries.

The new diplomatic presence is expected to provide a framework for closer government-to-government engagement while supporting efforts to expand commercial ties between Ghana and the Philippines.

The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with the latest commitments placing greater emphasis on trade, investment and private-sector cooperation.
