Paris has mobilised emergency response and cleaning teams after demonstrations on Saturday turned violent, with looting and property damage reported in several neighbourhoods of the French capital.

The City of Paris said the incidents endangered public safety, damaged businesses and degraded public spaces. Municipal teams were deployed to clear debris, clean roads and pavements, and secure damaged areas once conditions allowed.

Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire condemned the violence while distinguishing it from the peaceful demonstrations held by the majority of participants.

“Nothing, absolutely nothing, can justify endangering lives, ransacking businesses, or destroying public property,” Grégoire said, adding that those responsible for the violence were undermining the right to protest.

The mayor expressed solidarity with residents, shopkeepers whose premises were looted or vandalised, and employees affected by the damage. He pledged that the municipality would support those affected and help restore normal conditions.

The city activated its crisis unit on Saturday morning to monitor developments, coordinate municipal services and maintain contact with the Paris Police Prefecture.

Grégoire also convened an exceptional meeting with borough mayors at 7 p.m. to assess the situation across the capital, identify immediate needs and organise a coordinated response.

Cleaning operations were scheduled to intensify early on Sunday, October 18, across affected neighbourhoods. The municipality said it would remain mobilised in coordination with relevant authorities to assist residents and businesses, repair damage and restore calm.
