Ethiopian Orthodox Church Urges Government to Protect Citizens’ Right to Life

The Permanent Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, in a statement issued on the attacks on followers of the faith in various districts of the East Arsi Zone of the Oromia Regional State, called on the government to ensure the right to life of citizens.

The Permanent Synodos stated in a statement issued on October 30, 2025 that 25 people were killed in an attack by "unidentified gunmen" on church followers in the Guna, Merti, Sherka and Holonko Wabe districts of the East Arsi Zone.

The Permanent Synod announced in a statement that 25 "Orthodox people were killed by unknown gunmen while they were peacefully sleeping in our country and our land."

The synodos called on the government bodies directly involved in the case to condemn this inhuman act and "respect the right to life and freedom of religion guaranteed by the constitution.

It also called on the government to uphold the rule of law by bringing the individuals who committed this act to justice.
