Oromia Targets 120 Million Tea Seedlings as Green Legacy Expansion Accelerates

Oromia Region plans to plant 120 million tea seedlings this year under the Green Legacy programme as Ethiopia expands agroforestry-linked commercial crop development, according to reports.

Tea cultivation is being scaled up in the country’s southwest, particularly in Jimma and surrounding zones. Preparatory work, including nursery establishment and pit digging, has been completed for tea cultivation across 3,400 hectares in the region.

Regional officials stated that tea has been identified as a priority commercial crop to improve rural livelihoods. Authorities are also installing processing machinery to support value addition in the supply chain.
