Oromia Regional State is seeking to attract US investment into mining, agriculture, services and other sectors following talks between regional president Shimelis Abdisa and Mark Mitchell, a US Department of Commerce deputy assistant secretary.

Shimelis said he received Mitchell at his office and discussed ways to translate the longstanding economic relationship between Ethiopia and the US into investment and socio-economic opportunities in Oromia.

The talks focused on investment opportunities in the region and ways to attract US capital, technology and expertise to sectors with potential for expansion, according to a statement posted by Shimelis on social media.

US private-sector companies have expressed strong interest in investment opportunities in Ethiopia, particularly in Oromia, Mitchell told the regional government, according to Shimelis.

The two sides reached an understanding on potential US participation in mining, agriculture, services and other sectors, with American companies interested in bringing capital, technology and expertise, the president said.

The regional government also presented the investment opportunities and market potential available in Oromia and said it was working to create conditions conducive to domestic and international investment.

Shimelis said the regional government supports stronger economic ties between Ethiopia and the US and would encourage US private-sector participation in the regional economy.

The discussions come as Ethiopia seeks to attract foreign investment and technology to expand production, create jobs and increase trade. Oromia has significant agricultural resources and mineral deposits, alongside opportunities in services and other economic activities.

Shimelis said the regional government would continue the engagement with US counterparts to translate the opportunities identified into concrete investment projects and economic partnerships.
