Prominent opposition MP Dr. Desalegn Chane has confirmed he will not stand in Ethiopia’s seventh general election, citing what he describes as an “unfavourable environment” for free and fair voting.

Dr. Desalegn, who represents the Amhara National Movement (ANM), made the announcement in a Facebook post on February 6, 2025. He has built a reputation in parliament for his pointed questions and criticism of government policies.

Elected in 2021 to represent Bahir Dar City, Dr. Desalegn joined the Legislative Council in early 2022. His decision marks a rare withdrawal by a sitting opposition lawmaker ahead of a national vote.

The National Election Board of Ethiopia is set to close candidate registration on February 8, after opening it on January 9.
