According to a Wall Street Journal report, more Americans than ever are holding multiple jobs—not as a hobby, but as a necessity to cushion themselves against economic downturns and to keep up with rising inflation.

The data suggests a shift in motivation: gone are the days when second jobs were taken on for extra spending money or personal fulfillment. Today, many workers are driven by financial pressure.

Gen Z professionals, in particular, are entering the workforce with starting salaries that often fall short of covering the rising cost of living, increased tariffs, and mounting student loan debt. As a result, many are turning to side jobs or freelance work to stay afloat.

Business owners, too, are finding ways to diversify their income by exploring new ventures that require minimal startup capital. This approach provides a safety net if their primary business faces financial challenges.

Inflation, layoffs, tariffs, and global instability are pushing more Americans to find additional sources of income and build financial buffers for uncertain times
