North Korea has publicly disclosed the use of artificial intelligence-based guidance technology in cruise missile testing for the first time, as leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a broader military exercise involving tactical ballistic missiles and long-range artillery systems.

State media said the drills were designed to evaluate upgraded weapons intended for deployment under modern combat conditions, including systems positioned near the border with South Korea.

According to the reports, the cruise missiles tested are equipped with precision navigation and AI-supported terminal guidance systems capable of striking targets at distances of up to 100 kilometres.

The weapons exercises also examined the performance of long-range multiple-launch rocket systems and the effectiveness of what North Korea described as a “special mission warhead” fitted to tactical ballistic missiles.

Kim said the drills demonstrated that both the weapons and automated launch platforms had been modernised to improve battlefield application and operational readiness.
