Nigeria’s Tinubu Appoints New Adviser to Strengthen Ties with House of Representatives

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr Wasiu Olanrewaju-Smart as Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters – House of Representatives, replacing Hon. Ibrahim Olanrewaju, who resigned to pursue an elective position in his home state. The appointment takes immediate effect, according to the presidency.

Olanrewaju-Smart brings experience from both legislative and executive roles, having previously served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Intergovernmental Affairs from October 2023 until his latest appointment. His career in the National Assembly includes serving as Research and Media Assistant to the Minority/Majority Leader of the House of Representatives during the 7th and 8th Assemblies. He later became Special Adviser, Deputy Chief of Staff, and Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House during the 9th and 10th Assemblies.

The newly appointed adviser is also a public policy researcher with experience in legislative development. His research portfolio includes work on major legislative initiatives, including the Interest-Free Student Loan Act. Olanrewaju-Smart holds a PhD in Educational Management from Lead City University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University. He is an Edward Mason Fellow in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and previously participated as a LEAPS Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He also holds a professional diploma in Public Relations from the London School of Public Relations and served as a Policy Fellow at Quantum Alliance AI in the United States, focusing on artificial intelligence and civic technology.

Tinubu said he expects Olanrewaju-Smart to use his experience and expertise to strengthen coordination between the Presidency, government ministries, departments and agencies, and the House of Representatives.
