All 24 schoolgirls who were taken by assailants during a mass abduction last week from a school in northwestern Nigeria have been successfully rescued, as announced by the country’s president on Tuesday.

A total of 25 girls were kidnapped on November 17 from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School located in Kebbi state’s Maga town; however, one of them managed to escape on the same day, according to the school’s principal.

The remaining 24 girls have all been rescued, as stated by President Bola Tinubu, although no further details regarding the rescue operation were disclosed.

"I am relieved that all 24 girls have been accounted for. Now, we must urgently deploy more personnel in vulnerable areas to prevent further incidents of kidnapping," the statement quoted Tinubu as saying.

The attack in Kebbi is part of a series of recent mass abductions in Nigeria, which includes a raid on Friday at Saint Mary’s School in north-central Niger state, where over 300 students and staff from the Catholic institution were taken.

Fifty students managed to escape over the weekend.
