Nigeria Moves to Repatriate 130 Citizens From South Africa Amid Protests

Nigeria is preparing to repatriate at least 130 of its citizens from South Africa following a series of protests targeting foreign nationals, as tensions over immigration and public security concerns continue to rise in parts of the country.

Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the applications constitute the first group under a newly introduced government-assisted evacuation and support scheme. She said the initiative comes amid fears that confrontations linked to immigration enforcement and public demonstrations could escalate further.

The request follows protests last week in Pretoria and Johannesburg, where demonstrators called for stricter action against undocumented migrants. Protesters argued that illegal immigration was placing pressure on jobs, security and public services. Migrant-rights groups, however, say foreign nationals are frequently blamed for broader structural economic challenges.

Nigeria has condemned reported violence against its citizens, including the deaths of two Nigerians allegedly assaulted by security officials. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Nigeria is seeking full cooperation from South African authorities, including access to autopsy reports and case files.

Diplomatic engagement has been activated, including Nigeria’s summoning of South Africa’s High Commissioner in Abuja. Additional protests are expected on May 4 and May 8, with Nigerian authorities saying they are monitoring the situation closely.
