Nigeria Confirms Ebola Bundibugyo Case as Africa CDC Warns of Regional Threat

Nigeria has confirmed a case of Ebola Bundibugyo, prompting the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to mobilise support for the country as the agency warns that an outbreak spanning multiple African regions requires urgent international assistance.

Jean Kaseya, director-general of Africa CDC, said he was informed of the confirmed case on October 20 by Muhammad Ali Pate, Nigeria’s coordinating minister of health and social welfare. Kaseya called for immediate international action, including flexible financing, medical supplies, diagnostic equipment and trained emergency responders.

In a statement shared on social media, Kaseya said the outbreak had become the most geographically widespread Ebola outbreak in history, affecting multiple countries across three African regions. He warned that delays in mobilising resources could allow the disease to spread further.

Africa CDC declared the outbreak on May 15, 2026, and had warned of its potential regional implications, Kaseya said.

The agency has begun mobilising assistance for Nigeria while intensifying its response in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Kenya. It is also maintaining heightened vigilance in Uganda, according to Kaseya.

Kaseya cited a mortality rate approaching 50 percent in the DRC, describing the situation as a serious threat. He called for stronger community-based surveillance and faster deployment of resources to contain transmission.

The confirmation in Nigeria adds to concerns about the outbreak’s geographic reach and the risk of further cross-border spread. Kaseya urged international partners to act immediately, warning that the outbreak could continue to affect additional countries without a stronger response.

“Africa’s health security is global health security,” Kaseya said, calling for international solidarity to contain the outbreak.
