A new US consulate complex in Lagos has reached a major construction milestone after four years of work, bringing the 10-storey diplomatic facility closer to opening as Washington expands its presence in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

The US Consulate General in Lagos marked the completion of the building’s highest structural point on October 6 in a topping-off ceremony at Eko Atlantic City. The project has already channelled more than 95 million US dollars into the Nigerian economy through local employees, subcontractors and suppliers.

More than 1,500 Nigerian workers have received training under the project, while 120 Nigerian engineers, architects and administrators are currently working alongside 43 American construction professionals. The training is intended to leave workers with construction skills that can be applied beyond the project itself.

Richard Michaels, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa and Public Diplomacy, said the facility was designed to represent the relationship between the United States and Nigeria while supporting greater commercial engagement.

“With commerce at the heart of our priorities, no place in Africa is better positioned than Nigeria, with Lagos as its economic hub, to drive shared prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic,” Michaels said at the ceremony.

US Consul General Brandon Hudspeth hosted the event, which was attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, senior Nigerian government officials, diplomats, business leaders, representatives of US companies and Nigerian alumni of US government exchange programmes.

Hudspeth described the project as more than a diplomatic facility, saying it would provide a foundation for the next phase of US-Nigeria relations.

The compound is being built on a 12.2-acre, or 4.94-hectare, site in Eko Atlantic City. It will include the chancery, multipurpose rooms for public events and a new American Center intended to host cultural and educational programmes.

The facility was designed by New York-based Ennead Architects and is being constructed by Illinois-based Pernix International.
