Ethiopian Airlines plans to introduce two electric aircraft next year as part of its innovation drive, while continuing to expand its fleet with new jets from Boeing and Airbus over the coming years. The moves are part of its “Vision 2035” strategic roadmap, which aims to position the carrier among the world’s leading and most competitive aviation groups.

The airline confirmed it will take delivery of two Midnight electric aircraft from the U.S.-based Archer Aviation next year. The aircraft are designed for short-distance round trips ranging from 20 to 50 miles, with the ability to cut a 90-minute drive down to a 10-minute flight. The airline said the aircraft will primarily serve the tourism sector and could later support urban mobility.

The deal, first signed in March and valued at about $30 million, marks Ethiopian’s entry into electric aviation. It makes the airline the second in the world to adopt electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology through a partnership with Archer Aviation.

The development comes alongside a significant fleet expansion. Group CEO Mesfin Tasew told the Ethiopian News Agency that the airline has placed orders for about 120 new aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. The list includes Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, the next-generation 777X, and additional Airbus A350s.

Ethiopian is also receiving ongoing deliveries of the Boeing 737 MAX, with two planes arriving last month and more scheduled in the coming months. In addition to wide-body and narrow-body jets, the airline is looking to strengthen its regional network with new 100-seat aircraft. Tasew said procurement plans for regional jets are already underway.
