Netflix has added a specialised artificial intelligence filmmaking platform to its technology portfolio after acquiring InterPositive, a startup focused on using AI to support film production and post-production workflows. The acquisition, valued at 587 million US dollars, will bring InterPositive’s 16-member team of researchers, engineers and creative professionals into Netflix’s internal development operations. The company’s founder, Hollywood filmmaker Ben Affleck, will take on a senior advisory role following the deal.

InterPositive was established in 2022 and developed AI systems designed around the practical needs of filmmakers. Unlike generative tools that create video content from text prompts, the startup’s technology focuses on assisting existing production processes using material from a specific film or project. The company’s platform is trained on a production’s own daily footage, allowing it to maintain visual consistency within a project.

The tools are designed to help production teams address post-production challenges, including correcting continuity issues, removing production elements such as wires, adjusting backgrounds, reframing shots and modifying lighting conditions. Netflix said the integration of InterPositive’s technology is intended to provide filmmakers with additional production capabilities while preserving the creative direction established by directors and production teams.

Through the acquisition, Netflix aims to expand the use of AI tools that can support visual effects and editing processes, including the creation of digital assets tailored to individual projects. Affleck, who founded the company while working in Hollywood, is expected to help introduce the technology to filmmakers and support its adoption within the industry as part of his advisory role.

The acquisition reflects Netflix’s continued investment in innovative technologies to enhance content creation and production efficiency. Industry analysts view the deal as a strategic move to strengthen the company’s position in the rapidly evolving field of AI-assisted filmmaking.
