Netflix has appointed lead independent director Jay Hoag as chairman of its board, marking a leadership transition following the departure of co-founder Reed Hastings from the streaming company’s board.

The change took effect after Netflix’s annual shareholders meeting on June 4.

Hastings’ exit had been signalled earlier in April when he said he would leave Netflix to focus on philanthropy and other personal pursuits.

During his tenure, Hastings led Netflix through a major transformation from a DVD-by-mail rental service into a global streaming platform.

Hoag has served on Netflix’s board since 1999 and held the role of lead independent director for more than a decade.

Outside Netflix, Hoag sits on the boards of Zillow Group and Peloton Interactive.
