Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu travelled to Washington on Monday for talks with US President Donald Trump, with Iran expected to be the main issue on the agenda as the two leaders discuss regional security and diplomatic priorities. Netanyahu said the meeting would be his eighth with Trump since the US president began his second term, more than with any other international leader.

“From my experience as Prime Minister, during these complex times we must act with both great determination and great wisdom,” Netanyahu said before departing for Washington. He said the discussions would cover all major issues currently facing Israel, with Iran at the centre of the talks.

“First and foremost, Iran,” Netanyahu said, adding that Israel’s objectives include safeguarding its security and expanding what he described as the circle of peace in the region. Netanyahu said he was travelling with the goal of ensuring “the security, strength, and future” of Israel.

During his visit, Netanyahu also said he would pay final respects to US Senator Lindsey Graham, whom he described as a close friend of Israel and one of the country’s strongest supporters. The meeting comes as Israel and the United States continue consultations on regional security issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, military threats and efforts to advance diplomatic arrangements in the Middle East.
