Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a Security Cabinet meeting on Thursday to review developments concerning the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.

According to public broadcaster Kan, discussions focused on potential shifts in the US position, including scenarios in which Washington might reduce its direct involvement in Gaza or support solutions without Israeli approval.

A senior Israeli official told Kan that alternative strategies, including the possibility of a new military operation in Gaza, were considered if political negotiations faltered or if there was a significant change in the US stance.

The meeting comes ahead of a planned discussion between Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump on December 29 in Florida. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is also scheduled to meet representatives from Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt in Miami on Friday to discuss the next phase of the agreement.

The ceasefire, implemented on October 10 under a Trump-brokered proposal, halted nearly two years of conflict that left around 70,700 dead—predominantly women and children—and over 171,100 injured. The first phase involved the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Future plans include the reconstruction of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing framework without Hamas.
