The National Election Board of Ethiopia, in a consultation meeting with political party leaders on October 20, 2025, recommended that the seventh general election be held on june1, 2025.

While the board stated that this timetable is open to further discussions, the opposition parties expressed their concerns about the country's security situation and the deteriorating political environment, and expressed their concern that it would be impossible to hold a credible election under the current circumstances.

In an interview with Addis Standard, Professor Merera Gudina, the chairman of the Oromo Federalist Congress, said that the conditions required for a fair, free and credible election are "absolutely non-existent."

"For elections to be fair, free and credible, two basic conditions must be met: a level playing field for competing parties and the necessary peace and security to conduct their election campaigns; in the current situation, neither of these is present across the country," he said.
