Native is expanding into Africa’s offline consumer markets through the acquisition of Frontline Research Group, adding market share data from 14 countries as it seeks to help global consumer brands navigate one of the world’s most fragmented retail environments. The deal targets a long-standing challenge for multinational brands operating across Africa: understanding what is happening beyond formal retail channels. Native estimates that about 80 percent of the continent’s annual consumer spending, valued at about 1.7 trillion US dollars, flows through traditional trade networks spanning more than 10 million analogue stores.

For consumer goods companies, the lack of reliable store-level visibility has made it difficult to measure distribution, track competitors and determine whether commercial investments are translating into gains in market share. Native said combining Frontline’s research with its technology platform will provide brands with a clearer view of offline trade performance.

Sean Barnes, Chief Executive Officer of Frontline, said the combination would give brands access to a stronger set of tools by pairing Frontline’s regional market intelligence with Native’s technology capabilities. “Native's platform gives that data a new dimension, pairing our regional depth with major advancements in machine-readable retail, agentic AI and subscription software,” Barnes said.

Frontline has built market share panels covering 14 African markets and provides intelligence to major consumer goods companies, including AB InBev, Coca-Cola, Heineken, Diageo, Pepsi and Unilever. Its data will become a measurement layer within Native’s platform, the company said. Native already provides tools designed to help brands manage physical retail operations through its subscription products: Lattice for field execution, Strata for distribution analytics and Overwatch for commercial optimisation.

The company said the Frontline acquisition will link market intelligence with execution data, allowing companies to assess whether actions taken in stores are improving their position. “Most people would look at Frontline and see a regional research company. We see a proprietary data asset at the centre of a 1.7 trillion US dollars consumer economy,” said Matt McNabb, Chief Executive Officer of Native. The acquisition marks Native’s move beyond Latin America into Africa as the company builds what it calls an operating system for offline trade.
