NASA Launches Roman Space Telescope On Million-Mile Journey

NASA has launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on a three-month journey to its final orbit around the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, about one million miles from Earth, where it will study dark matter, dark energy and planets beyond the solar system.

The telescope lifted off at 7:26am EDT Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The launch marks the beginning of a mission designed to survey large areas of the universe with a combination of a wide field of view and infrared imaging. NASA expects Roman to survey the universe about 1,000 times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope.

Ground controllers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center began receiving telemetry seven minutes after launch. The Falcon Heavy separated from the observatory 31 minutes into the flight, while its boosters returned safely to the launch site for refurbishment.

About 70 minutes after launch, communications with Roman were transferred from NASA’s Near Space Network to the Deep Space Network, which will guide the telescope towards its destination at L2.

Roman successfully deployed its solar panels and lower instrument sun shade about one hour and 23 minutes after launch. Controllers are expected to deploy additional components, conduct its first course correction and activate the Coronagraph Instrument in the coming days.

The coronagraph will test technology intended for future missions searching for Earth-like planets beyond the solar system. During its demonstration, Roman will image Jupiter-sized planets.

Several weeks into the journey, NASA plans to activate Roman’s primary Wide Field Instrument, a 300-megapixel infrared camera equipped with 18 detectors. The instrument will allow the telescope to rapidly survey large sections of the sky and build detailed infrared maps of the universe.

Roman is expected to transmit about 1.4 terabytes of data each day, according to NASA, making it the agency’s highest-data-rate astrophysics mission to date. Artificial intelligence, machine learning and citizen scientists will assist researchers in processing the large volume of observations and identifying potentially significant discoveries.

The telescope will spend the remainder of its three-month commissioning period undergoing instrument tests and calibrations. NASA expects to release Roman’s first images by early 2027.

The mission will investigate the nature of dark matter and dark energy, which together account for most of the universe’s estimated contents, while also searching for and studying exoplanets.

Roman is the fourth primary NASA mission launched aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket. NASA’s Launch Services Program worked with SpaceX to bring forward the launch date after the telescope was completed ahead of schedule.

The mission is managed by NASA Goddard, with participation from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Caltech/IPAC and the Space Telescope Science Institute, alongside scientists from research institutions in the US and abroad. Major industrial partners include BAE Systems, L3Harris Technologies and Teledyne Scientific & Imaging.

The European Space Agency, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, France’s CNES and Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Astronomy are also contributing to the mission.
