Namibia has regained full standing with the global financial system after completing reforms that led to its removal from the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) grey list, ending more than two years of enhanced monitoring.

The decision was confirmed during FATF’s plenary meeting in Paris on Friday, following an assessment that found Namibia had made sufficient progress in addressing weaknesses identified in its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework.

The country was placed on the grey list in February 2024 after FATF highlighted 13 strategic deficiencies in its systems for preventing financial crimes. The designation placed Namibia under closer international scrutiny while authorities worked to implement corrective measures.

Since then, the government has introduced a series of regulatory, supervisory and institutional changes aimed at improving oversight, strengthening enforcement and aligning national standards with FATF requirements.

Namibia’s Ministry of Finance said the country’s successful completion of the agreed reform programme, combined with the outcome of the on-site evaluation, allowed it to exit enhanced monitoring.

The FATF grey list applies to jurisdictions that have committed to resolving identified weaknesses in their financial crime prevention frameworks. Countries on the list remain under increased monitoring until agreed reforms are completed.
