Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni said on Sunday that his decisive election win underscored the dominance of his National Resistance Movement (NRM), which has governed the East African nation for four decades.

Museveni, 81, made the comments a day after official results declared him the winner, with 71.6 percent of the vote. His main challenger, opposition leader Bobi Wine, dismissed the results as fraudulent, securing 24.7 percent. Voter turnout was 52 percent, the lowest since Uganda returned to multiparty politics in 2006.

“The outcome provides a good taste of the strength of our party,” Museveni said, adding: “The opposition are fortunate—they have not experienced our full strength.”

Observers noted that Museveni has maintained his grip on power through constitutional changes that removed presidential term limits and age restrictions, while potential challengers have been jailed or politically sidelined.
