Morocco has secured a fresh 500 million euro financing package from the European Investment Bank (EIB) as the country continues large-scale rebuilding efforts following the deadly 2023 earthquake that devastated communities south of Marrakech.

The latest approval doubles the EIB’s total financial commitment to Morocco’s recovery programme to 1 billion euro.

Moroccan authorities have been pushing ahead with projects aimed at restoring transportation links, public services and economic activity in areas heavily damaged by the disaster.

The September 8, 2023 earthquake was the deadliest recorded in Morocco since 1960. More than 2,900 people were killed.

The EIB said the financing would contribute to improving the quality and durability of public infrastructure while supporting broader efforts to restore living conditions.

Since the disaster, Morocco has launched extensive rebuilding initiatives designed to revive regional economies and rehabilitate damaged public assets.
